Happy Balloon Ascension Day! On January 9th, 1793, French aeronaut and inventor, Jean Paul Blanchard made the first successful balloon flight ever to take place in North America. Blanchard stood in front of Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, made some last-minute adjustments to his balloon while a sizable crowd, including President George Washington, looked on.
Blanchard reached an altitude of 200 fathoms during the course of his flight and came down gently in the field of a confused farmer who helped him get back to town. Thanks to Blanchard’s flight, balloon travel became more popular.
It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.
What new heights do you hope to reach in 2016?
