Play a game with someone! Here are a few of our favorites...

1.    Mix up a deck of cards.
2.    Lay the cards in rows, face down.
3.    Each player takes a turn, turning over any two cards.
4.    If the two cards match, the player can keep them.
5.    If they don't match, the player must turn them back over.
6.    Remember what was on each card and where it was.
7.    Watch and remember during the other player's turn.
8.    The game is over when all the cards have been matched.
9.    The player with the most matches wins.

Crazy Eights (Like Uno but with a regular deck of cards):

1.    Deal five cards to each player (seven each if there are only two players). Place the rest of the deck face down on the table, and the top card of the deck face up beside the stock to start the discard pile.
2.    Play clockwise, staring with the player to the dealer’s left.
3.    If the top card of the discard pile is not an eight, you may play any card which matches the rank or suit of the previous card (for example if the top card was the king of hearts you could play any king or any heart).
4.    An eight is considered wild and may be played on any card, and the player of the eight must nominate a suit.
5.    If an eight is on top of the pile, you must play either another eight or any card of the suit nominated by the person who played the eight.
6.    The first player to get rid of all their cards wins, and the other players score penalty points according to the cards they have left in their hands - 50 for an eight, 10 for a picture, and spot cards at face value (one point for an ace, two for a two and so on).
7.    If the stock pile is exhausted, the played cards, except for the last card, are shuffled and stacked face down to make a new stock.

·         Requires a standard deck of cards (no Jokers)
·         Spoons, one fewer than there are players
·         3 to 13 players

Deal four cards to each player and arrange spoons in a small circle in the center of the table. Each player tries to make four of a kind. The dealer takes a card off the top of the deck, giving him five cards in his hand, removes one and passes it facedown to the left. Play continues in this fashion with each player discarding to the person on his or her left and the last player placing his onto the discard pile.

Cards are picked up and passed quickly around the table until someone gets four of a kind and takes a spoon from the center. Once the player with four of a kind takes a spoon, anyone can take a spoon. The player left without a spoon gets a letter. If the stack of draw cards runs out, stop to reshuffle and continue play.

The object of the game is to be the last player remaining who hasn’t lost enough rounds to spell out S-P-O-O-N. Spell out “SPOON,” and you’re out.

Players who have reached four of a kind can be subtle and sneak a spoon under the noses of other players paying too close of attention to their cards or a blatant grab that results in the others scrambling for the remaining spoons on the table. Either way, it’s a hilarious game that keeps your mind and body moving.

Sometimes we forget just how lonely a party or family gathering can be for spouses of co-workers or people new to the group. Try to make sure every person in a group conversation feels included.

How to Simplify the Holidays - Tip 2

- Thursday, December 08, 2016

Simplify the holidays? Is it even possible? The short answer is yes. Here is Tip #2 to help you relax this holiday season.

2.    Before the decorations go up in stores and around town, consider what is most important to you and create the holiday you want. Pressures from various sides of the family pull us in all directions off our centers. When you and your spouse or partner make clear decisions about how you want to spend your time and resources for a particular holiday, the holiday becomes much more enjoyable. If there’s an annual event no one enjoys, you don’t have to go. A simple RSVP with a polite no and thank you is perfectly acceptable.
